Goal setting is a term which is so often thrown about, but how many of us actually do it? I can confidently say that goal setting up until about a year or so ago, was not something I ever bothered with. I always ‘mentally’ had goals or things I wanted to achieve but I very rarely would put pen to paper and write them down. It was only after receiving a MiGoals book as a gift, that I started taking goal setting more seriously. I realised that I actually enjoyed filling this book out and brainstorming ways to achieve my goals and then documenting how it made me feel afterwards. It’s quite easy on days when we are feeling a bit down, to get caught up in our own thoughts on our ‘lack of achievements’, however by being able to refer to your goals book it allows that negative mind frame to shift.
You see without goal setting it’s impossible to know exactly what you are aiming for or what you are wanting to achieve. It’s like shooting at a target with a blindfold on. Ultimately, goal setting helps you to remain focused in the short term, so that you can reach your long-term goals.
The other beneficial component of goal setting is that it gives you something to measure your progress with. For instance, if you have a weight loss goal, seeing the numbers on the scale creep closer and closer to your goal weight gives you the motivation and encouragement to keep going.
Goal setting doesn’t even have to be just used for our big goals, in fact using them daily helps us remain organised and on track with the tasks ahead of us for the day. I don’t know about you, but ticking things off a to do list, is oh so satisfying!
Within Wellness Coaching, goal setting plays a very important role, working together we will break down your long term goal or vision, into smaller more manageable pieces. Then week by week, we chip away at those small goals until we arrive at our goal destination.
Goal setting doesn’t have to be difficult or boring, in fact it should be the exact opposite! Do yourself a favour and get a diary or note pad, or even a MiGoals journal, and start documenting what it is that you want to achieve. Just make sure your goals are very specific, that they are measurable, achievable, relevant, and timely. Write it all down and then start brainstorming ways in which you can achieve those goals. Put it out there to the universe, take the action, and then watch the rest unfold!
